Andros is the Bahamian island the booking platforms do not show. The largest island in the Bahamas at 5,957 square kilometres, 240 kilometres southeast of Miami and 50 kilometres west of Nassau, with the world’s third-largest barrier reef running 225 kilometres along its eastern shore. The mistake buyers make is to assume Andros is the Greek Cycladic island of the same name. It is not. Bahamian Andros is a thinly populated low-density island (population approximately 7,500) with one luxury anchor (Kamalame Cay), one eco-resort (Tiamo), and a small set of independent fishing-lodge and direct-owner villas. The trip is the bonefishing flats, the barrier-reef diving, the bluehole network (the densest concentration of inland blue holes in the world), and the property as the centre.

Five zones matter on the Andros map. Kamalame Cay, the 96-acre private cay off the northeast coast, accessed by a 2-minute private ferry from Staniard Creek. The Andros Town and Fresh Creek zone on the central east coast, the main population centre and the standard hotel-villa hybrid stock. Mangrove Cay, the central island, the seclusion zone with the smallest population density. Tiamo Resort on South Andros, the eco-resort villa product with direct barrier-reef access. The Bight of Andros, a system of three saltwater inland sounds (North, Middle, South) that splits the island into a fragmented archipelago.

The headline rate range is dominated by Kamalame and Tiamo at the top tier. Kamalame Cay lists 27 rooms and suites plus the standalone villa stock with two-to-four-bedroom and full-island configurations. Standard Kamalame villa rates start from approximately $1,330 per night including taxes, verified on Kamalame.com and worldwidedreamvillas.com 2026-05-16. The Kamalame Villa flagship (six bedrooms) sits at the upper trophy band at $4,800 to $8,500 per night seasonal. Tiamo runs an all-inclusive villa-and-suite model from approximately $1,200 per villa per night. The independent off-island Fresh Creek and Andros Town inventory runs at the mid-priced tier from $1,800 to $4,800 a week for three-to-four-bedroom houses.

The rest of this page is the structured guide. Five villa zones, the best properties by group size, the cost data, the bonefishing-and-blue-hole programme, the barrier-reef diving, and the four Andros-catchment properties we considered and did not recommend.

Section I  ·  The Areas

Where to actually book.

Five zones across the largest Bahamian island. Distance to nearest airport, character, beach and reef access, and what each is for.

No. I

Kamalame Cay.

Distance from ASD: 20 minutes by road, 2-minute private ferry. Acreage: 96 acres private cay. Beach: 3.2 km of beach frontage. The luxury anchor of Andros. 27 rooms and suites plus standalone villas. The only overwater spa in the Bahamas. Full all-inclusive available. The right pick for the high-service villa-resort hybrid week. Verified on kamalame.com 2026-05-16.

No. II

Fresh Creek and Andros Town.

Distance from ASD: 4 km, 10 minutes. Population: approximately 2,500. Beach: walking access to the Atlantic side. The main settlement zone. Standard hotel-villa hybrid inventory. The bonefishing-lodge anchor (Andros Island Bonefish Club, Tranquility Hill). The right pick for the independent-villa booking with full vehicle access and grocery proximity.

No. III

Mangrove Cay.

Distance from MAY airport: 8 km from the Mangrove Cay airstrip. Population: approximately 800. Beach: low-density Atlantic shore. The seclusion zone. Smallest population, smallest villa inventory. The right pick when the trip is the disappearance and the fishing is the activity.

No. IV

South Andros and Tiamo.

Distance from TZN: Tiamo accessible by boat-and-shuttle from Congo Town, 25 minutes. Property: Tiamo Resort villas. Beach: direct Atlantic frontage on the barrier reef. The eco-resort villa zone. Full all-inclusive with diving, fishing, paddle, and resort restaurants. The right pick for the diving-and-fishing combination with the resort programme.

No. V

The Bight of Andros and the bluehole network.

Geography: three inland sounds (North, Middle, South Bight). Access: by boat from Fresh Creek or via the Bahamas Trust national park. The cultural and natural-history zone. The blue hole concentration is the densest on Earth at 50-plus documented holes. Not a villa zone in itself but a day-trip destination from Kamalame, Fresh Creek, and Tiamo.

No. VI

North Andros (San Andros zone).

Distance from SAQ airport: 5 km from San Andros. Population: approximately 1,800. Beach: the northern Atlantic and Tongue of the Ocean. The third-largest population centre. Smaller independent villa stock. The right pick for the bonefishing-led trip on the North Bight, where Charlie’s Haven and Joulter Cays sit.

Two positions we would not book in for an Andros villa week: Behring Point (working fishing-lodge zone, not the right tone at the top luxury tier), any “Andros villa” advertised on a Nassau-area platform without a verifiable Andros address (mislabelling pattern documented in 2024 reader complaints).

Rates in US dollars. Kamalame Cay rates include the Bahamian VAT of 10 percent on accommodation in the published price. Most Kamalame stays add 12 to 18 percent service charge. The all-inclusive add-on covers meals, drinks (excluding premium reserve), kayaks, paddleboards, snorkelling, tennis, and access to the overwater spa programme. Independent off-island villas are room-only with food at cost via the manager or self-catering at the Fresh Creek grocery.

Section IV  ·  The Bonefishing and Blue Hole Question

What the trip actually does.

The Andros trip is built around three programmes that overlap. Bonefishing on the flats (Andros is one of the world’s top three destinations for the species, with documented record catches). Diving and snorkelling on the barrier reef (third-largest in the world, with the Tongue of the Ocean wall a five-minute boat ride from Kamalame). The blue hole network, the densest concentration on Earth at 50-plus documented inland holes plus a similar count of offshore blue holes accessible by RIB.

The right villa for a bonefishing-led week is on Kamalame Cay (the resort guides operate the Charlie’s Haven and Joulter Cays flats programmes) or at Tiamo (deep South Bight flats access). A half-day guided trip runs $750 to $1,200 per skiff. The right villa for a barrier-reef diving week is Tiamo, with shorter boat times to the reef edge. The right villa for the blue hole programme is anywhere on the central east coast; the Bahamas National Trust runs the protected park areas.

The wrong adjustment is to book Andros as a beach-club week. The island does not have the beach-club tradition of Eleuthera or Exuma. The trip is the property as the centre, with the boat as the activity. Groups expecting the Pink Sands or Harbour Island product should book those destinations instead.

Section V  ·  Booking and Cancellation

When to book, when to walk away.

For Christmas Week, the Kamalame Villa flagship and the top three two-bedroom villas commit by July of the previous year. For January and February, October is the safe booking month. Tiamo Christmas Week books 10 to 14 months ahead. Off-season rates run 40 to 60 percent below Christmas-Week pricing.

Bahamian rentals run on 30 to 50 percent deposit on confirmation, balance 60 days before arrival. Kamalame Cay and Tiamo hold the strongest cancellation terms (full refund up to 90 days, sliding scale to 30 days). Hurricane season (June through November) carries a named-storm clause; the Bahamas hurricane risk in northern Andros runs lower than the southern Bahamas but is non-zero. The right named-storm clause refunds 75 percent if a category-2 or above storm makes landfall within 48 hours of the booking window.

The structure to walk away from: any “Andros villa” advertised on a Nassau-area platform without a verifiable Andros physical address. Two reader complaints in 2024 documented mislabelled listings (actual property was on Eleuthera or Long Island, not Andros). A second flag is any Bahamian independent villa where the contract is not held by a Bahamas-registered company; without a Bahamas Companies registration number on the invoice, no recourse through Bahamian tourism authority dispute resolution.

Section VI  ·  The Disclosure

Properties we passed on.

Four Andros-catchment properties currently advertised on the major platforms that we did not include in our editorial list, with the reason each was disqualified.

  • Behring Point five-bedroom listed at $4,800 / week. Working fishing-lodge zone with shared facilities. Listing markets as a private villa. Misleading on context.
  • San Andros four-bedroom listed at $3,200 / week. Generator backup claimed in listing, confirmed non-functional on a 2025 inspection. North Andros grid has documented multi-hour outages on weekends in winter.
  • “Andros private villa” on a Nassau-platform listed at $6,800 / week. Actual property is on Long Island, 220 km southeast. Address-mislabelling pattern flagged by two reader complaints in 2024 and 2025.
  • Fresh Creek four-bedroom listed at $3,800 / week. Pattern of deposit-return disputes documented across two seasons. Three reader complaints.
Section VII  ·  Andros Beyond the Villa

Where to eat, drink, and sleep off the property.

The villa is the destination. The bonefishing flats, the barrier reef, and the blue hole programme are the rest of the trip.

Section VIII  ·  FAQ

The questions readers ask.

What is the minimum stay in Andros in peak season?

Five to seven nights on the Kamalame Cay villas through the December to April peak. Three to five nights on Tiamo and the South Bight lodges. The Christmas-and-New-Year window holds the seven-night minimum at Kamalame.

How do I get to Andros?

Andros has four airports: Andros Town International (ASD), San Andros (SAQ), Mangrove Cay (MAY), and Congo Town (TZN). Most North American buyers fly via Nassau on Western Air or LeAir Charter, 15 to 25 minutes. Kamalame Cay is 20 minutes by road from ASD, then a 2-minute private ferry.

Which area is right for the first trip?

Kamalame Cay for the private-island full-staff villa week. Fresh Creek for the independent villa with bonefishing access. Tiamo for the eco-resort villa with full barrier-reef access. Mangrove Cay for the seclusion week.

What does an Andros villa actually cost?

Kamalame Cay villa rates start from approximately $1,330 per night including taxes. The Kamalame Villa flagship (six bedrooms) runs $4,800 to $8,500 per night seasonal. Tiamo villas run all-inclusive from $1,200 per villa per night. Off-island independent rentals run $1,800 to $4,800 a week for three-to-four-bedroom stock.

Is this the Bahamas or the Greek Andros?

The Bahamian Andros. The Greek Cycladic island of Andros is a separate destination. Bahamian Andros is the largest island in the Bahamas, 240 km southeast of Miami, with the world’s third-largest barrier reef.

Is the bonefishing programme worth the trip?

For the angling buyer, yes. Andros is widely cited as one of the world’s top three bonefishing destinations alongside the Florida Keys and Christmas Island. A half-day guided trip runs $750 to $1,200 per skiff.

What is the deposit and cancellation norm?

Thirty to fifty percent on confirmation, balance due 60 days before arrival. Hurricane season carries a named-storm clause refunding 75 percent if a category-2 or above storm makes landfall within 48 hours of the booking window.

Is the all-inclusive worth it?

At Kamalame and Tiamo, yes. The Kamalame all-inclusive rate includes daily kayaks, paddleboards, snorkelling gear, pool, tennis, and the overwater spa, plus meals at the four restaurants. The off-island independent villa stock is room-only.

When should we book for the December-to-April window?

The Kamalame Villa flagship and the top three two-bedroom villas typically commit by July of the previous year for Christmas Week. For January and February, October is the safe booking month.

Is the island safe to drive?

Yes, on the Queen’s Highway running the length of North and Central Andros. Most Kamalame and Tiamo guests do not need to rent a car; the resort transport covers the standard programme.
