Canggu is the 7 km of surf-and-cafe coast 22 km north of Seminyak, from Berawa at the south end through Batu Bolong and Echo Beach to Pererenan and Cemagi at the north. The coast is dark-sand, the surf is reliable year-round (best from May through September on the dry-season swell), and the inland rice-field belt runs back 1 to 3 km from the beach. The Canggu villa pool is the largest editorial-tier supply in Bali after Seminyak, with rates 35 to 60 percent below the Seminyak equivalent at the same bedroom count.

For a villa week, four zones matter. Berawa at the south end for the cafe density (Crate, Penny Lane), the rooftop pool clubs (Atlas, Finns), and the family-and-walkable rhythm. Batu Bolong and Echo Beach for the surf-and-sunset week with the strongest beach restaurant lineup. Pererenan for the quieter next-wave alternative with newer villa stock. Cemagi north of Pererenan for the rice-field seclusion at lower per-bedroom rates. The traffic question matters: the Jalan Pantai Berawa to Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong corridor in the 16:00 to 19:30 window can run 40 minutes for 4 km. The right pick is a villa that walks to the cafes and beach you will visit most.

The cost-to-experience floor is the lowest of any editorial-tier destination on this site. Editorial entry is $8,000 per week, which buys a four-bedroom villa with private pool 800 metres to 1.2 km from the beach in shoulder. A six-bedroom villa walking distance to the surf runs $14,000 to $32,000 in peak. The named anchor, verified May 2026 on villacanggu.com: Villa Canggu (6BR/12g, two pools, 100 metres to the beach, fully staffed with manager, chef, attendants, butlers, and security) lists $9,303 per week in peak (July 4 to August 28) and $11,158 per week for the New Year period (December 26 to January 5). Elite Havens runs a 25 percent “Island Escapes” discount valid for stays through December 1 2026 (booking deadline June 30 2026).

The rest of this page is the structured guide. Four villa zones, the best villas by group size including Villa Canggu, the cost data with the Seminyak cross-reference, the traffic math, the surf programme, and the seven properties we considered and did not include.

Section I  ·  The Areas

Where to actually book.

Four villa zones across the 7 km of Canggu coast. Distance from the beach, cafe density, surf access, and what each is for.

No. I

Berawa, south end.

Distance from beach: 100 metres to 1.5 km. Cafe density: highest (Crate, Penny Lane, The Lawn). Surf: Berawa Beach, intermediate. Pool clubs: Atlas, Finns Beach Club. The first-trip zone. Strongest restaurant and cafe walkable density, the family-and-cafe rhythm, the largest villa inventory. Higher-priced than Pererenan. The right pick for first-trip groups with children or for groups whose programme is cafe-and-pool-club mornings.

No. II

Batu Bolong and Echo Beach.

Distance from beach: 100 metres to 800 metres. Cafe density: high (Old Man’s, La Brisa, Luigi’s Hot Pizza). Surf: Echo Beach right and Batu Bolong, the surf school capital of Bali. The surf-and-sunset zone. Strongest beach-bar lineup at sunset, the surf school density, the photographers. Higher-priced for the surf premium. The right pick for surf-led groups and for trips where the daily anchor is the sunset drink on the beach.

No. III

Pererenan, north of Echo Beach.

Distance from beach: 200 metres to 1.2 km. Cafe density: growing (Hideout, Cafe Vespa, Doppio). Surf: Pererenan Beach, intermediate to advanced. The next-wave zone. Newer villa stock (mostly 2018 to 2024 builds), quieter pace, the alternative for groups who find Berawa too crowded. Mid-priced. The right pick for the second-trip-to-Canggu group.

No. IV

Cemagi, north end.

Distance from beach: 300 metres to 2 km. Cafe density: low. Surf: Mengening Beach and Cemagi Beach, less crowded. The rice-field-seclusion zone. Lower-priced, larger plots, the rice-field walking circuit, the daily 15-minute drive south to Canggu cafes. The right pick at the sub-$8,000 weekly tier for groups who want the rice-field aesthetic.

No. V

The inland rice-field belt.

Distance from beach: 1.5 to 3 km. Cafe density: moderate to high. The villa-and-pool zone. Larger lot sizes, lower per-bedroom rates, the pool-as-the-anchor pattern. The right pick for groups whose programme is mostly the villa with two or three beach mornings, and for budget-conscious group bookings.

No. VI

Seminyak spillover (Petitenget).

Distance from Canggu Berawa: 3 to 5 km, 15 to 30 minutes by car depending on traffic. The bridge zone. Worth flagging for groups who want both Canggu cafe-and-surf and Seminyak hotel-and-bar. A Petitenget villa sits at the bridge between the two and offers the daily 20-minute trip north to Canggu and 10 minutes south to Seminyak. Higher-priced. The right pick for split-objective groups.

Two positions we would not book in for a Canggu villa week: any villa on Jalan Raya Canggu without a private driveway and gated parking (the road is loud from 06:00 to 23:00), any villa within 200 metres of a construction site visible on Google Maps satellite imagery from the prior six months (the Canggu build cycle is fast and the noise is hard to mitigate).

Rates are weekly, in US dollars. Villa Canggu rates are “all inclusive” per the operator (full staff including manager, chef, attendants, butlers, security; villa expenses; villa wifi). Verified on villacanggu.com May 2026. PB1 Indonesian government tax (11 percent) and service charge typically built in to listed rates on the Elite Havens estate, confirmed at booking. Other Canggu villas vary: most carry 11 percent tax plus a 5 to 10 percent service charge above the headline. Elite Havens runs a 25 percent “Island Escapes” discount through December 1 2026 (booking deadline June 30 2026).

Section IV  ·  The Seminyak Question

When Canggu is right, when Seminyak still is.

Canggu and Seminyak are the two adult-oriented coastal zones on Bali’s south coast. The booking decision between them is the cleanest one in Bali villa rentals because the trade-offs are sharp. Seminyak runs the polished hotel-and-restaurant pattern: Potato Head, Ku De Ta, Mrs Sippy, the long-established beach clubs and the bar-club density. Canggu runs the cafe-and-surf pattern: Crate, La Brisa, Old Man’s, and a younger crowd. Seminyak is 22 km south and 30 to 45 minutes closer to the airport.

The math, at the same bedroom count: Canggu runs 35 to 60 percent below the Seminyak equivalent in peak. A six-bedroom villa walking distance to the beach in Canggu at $14,000 a week has its Seminyak twin priced at $22,000 to $34,000. For groups whose decision criterion is rate, Canggu wins. For groups whose decision criterion is the polished bar week and the airport transfer time, Seminyak wins.

The combined trip works. Three nights Seminyak for the hotel-and-bar pattern, four in Canggu for the cafe-and-surf, with the daily 30-minute drive linking them. The wrong adjustment is to book a full week on Canggu for a group whose primary anchor is the Seminyak nightlife. The right play is to book Canggu for what Canggu does (cafe, surf, value, family-and-cafe) and Seminyak for what Seminyak does (polished restaurant-and-bar, airport proximity, the long-established clubs).

Section V  ·  The Traffic Math

Why villa choice beats car rental.

The Berawa-to-Echo-Beach corridor on Jalan Pantai Berawa and Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong, in the 16:00 to 19:30 window, runs 25 to 40 minutes for what looks like 4 km on the map. The morning rush (07:30 to 09:30) on the same roads runs 15 to 25 minutes for 4 km. Outside those windows the same drive is 8 to 12 minutes. The villa choice should pre-empt the traffic, not work around it.

The right play is to choose a villa that walks to the cafes and beach restaurants you will visit most. Berawa villas should walk to Crate, Penny Lane, Atlas, Finns. Batu Bolong villas should walk to Old Man’s, La Brisa, the surf school, Luigi’s. Pererenan villas should walk to Hideout, Doppio, Cafe Vespa, and Pererenan Beach. Cross-zone drives should be limited to the off-peak windows (before 14:30 or after 20:00).

Scooter is the local solution, with the caveat that foreign visitors driving scooters without a valid international permit run real legal exposure. The legal grey area is wider than most rental operators admit. The right call for families and for trips with anyone uncomfortable on a scooter is to use the villa-arranged driver-with-car ($45 to $75 per half-day) for cross-zone moves and walk everywhere else. Gojek and Grab operate in Canggu with constraints (driver pick-ups are restricted in some Berawa lanes by local taxi associations) and Bluebird metered taxis are the legal alternative.

Section VI  ·  The Disclosure

Villas we passed on.

Seven Canggu properties currently advertised on the major platforms that we did not include in our editorial list, with the reason each was disqualified.
